Visa holders are allowed to stay in Australia for the duration of their course, and are allowed to travel to and from Australia during the visa validity period.
When your course is in session you are permitted to work for up to 40 hours per week to help cover expenses. When your course is not in session this restriction is lifted.

The Higher Education Sector visa is for students who have been accepted to study at a participating Australian educational institution.
To be eligible for the Australia Higher Education sector visa, you must be accepted to take part in one of the following higher education courses:
Who can apply for a Higher Education Sector visa?
You can apply for this visa if:
- this is your first application for an Australia Student visa
- you are applying for a subsequent Australia Student visa
- you have a relative in Australia already on a student visa
What a Higher Education Sector visa lets you do
If your Higher Education Sector visa is approved:
- you may study in Australia at your participating educational provider
- work for 40 hours per fortnight when your course is in session, and work unlimited hours when your course is not in session
- you may be accompanied by eligible dependent family members
- your partner / spouse may join you and study in Australia for up to three months

Higher Education Sector visa eligibility criteria
To be eligible for a Student visa you must be accepted to study in a full-time course in a participating Australian educational institution.
You must be able to prove that your intentions to study in Australia are genuine, and that you will depart Australia once your studies have been completed.
Financial requirements
You must show that you have sufficient funds to cover all expenses, including travel and living expenses for the duration of your stay.
If you have a partner or dependent children you must also have sufficient funds to cover them even if they do not intend to travel to Australia with you.
Health requirements
To minimise any health risks to the Australian community you are required to undergo a health examination before travelling to Australia.
Character requirements
Every visa applicant is required to meet the character requirements set by the Department of Home Affairs before entering Australia.
